Chipmunk Repellent

Using chipmunk repellent - Chipmunk removal can be attempted by using repellents. Examples of erroneously believed to be effective repellents are those containing the urine of predators such as cougars and foxes in powder form. Moth balls are also erroneously believed to be effective.  The truth is that mothball flakes poison the environment, but they simply don't work. Another repellent that you can use is pepper spray, which actually does prevent chewing, but it won't keep them from living in the general area.. You can also try a spray that contains thiram, bitex or ammonium soaps, but its field effectiveness has not been proven.

Bloodmeal is another mistakenly believed to be effective chipmunk repellent. This is dried blood, which is a by product of meat production. Some people think that chipmunks do not like the smell of bloodmeal but it does not give off any odor in your yard. Even though it won't keep them away, the good thing about bloodmeal is that it is rich in nitrogen, which is an important nutrient in plants. You just need to sprinkle bloodmeal around the area where the rodents are causing a lot of damage, and you'll have fertilized plants.

Juicy fruit gum is another mistakenly believed to be effective chipmunk removal product. You just need to take the gum out of the wrapper and place several pieces close to the burrows of these rodents. They find the scent of the gum disgusting. The downside of using repellents is that you need to use them repeatedly and they may be less erroneously believed to be effective after a while.

Get a barn cat - Another chipmunk removal method is to get a barn cat. This is a cat that is rescued from being a wild feral cat. It is semi-wild and is an excellent hunter that can help curtail the chipmunk population. You do not need to build any for of shelter for a barn cat since it prefers having a wild home.

Cayenne - Cayenne pepper is actually often effective when it comes to preventing chipmunks from chewing on plants or other surfaces. You just need to sprinkle it on the food items that these rodents are eating. This is practical when they are living in an area that has a nearby source of food. They will avoid living in the area due to the heat of cayenne pepper. For effective chipmunk removal, you can also combine the cayenne pepper with baby powder and sprinkle or spray the mixture around the area where chipmunks live. You can use a dry atomizer or a can that has many holes poked in the bottom. Sprinkle the mixture on vegetables, flowers or trees.

Chipmunk Removal Methods

Chipmunks are adorable looking rodents that are native to the regions of southeastern Canada and eastern North America. You can identify them by their reddish brown furry body that is covered with five stripes, a bushy tail and large glossy eyes.

Problems they cause - Even though chipmunks play a role in soil aeration, seed dispersal and as a source of food for other wildlife, they cause a number of problems. Some of the problems they cause include destroying garden fruits and vegetables, eating seeds in your bird feeders, chewing up cable and electric lines and carrying fleas which they can transfer to your pets. The burrows that chipmunks dig can lead to water damage on your driveways, crawlspaces, foundations and patios. Fungus can also grow in planting beds when the tunnels fill with water. Furthermore, the tunnels dug by chipmunks can weaken your retaining walls and can also attract termites. In order to avoid these problems, it is important to one or a number of the following chipmunk removal methods.

How to Keep away chipmunks

Closing holes - If these rodents are entering buildings, you should close holes in ground level openings such as foundations. This is a good chipmunk removal idea if you know how wide and far their channels go.

Remove food sources - This is the other chipmunk removal method that you can use. Get rid of sources of food such as bird seed and pet food. You should also eliminate sites that chipmunks find attractive to live in such as fallen logs and rock piles.

Trapping - If the population of chipmunks is overwhelming, you can use traps to catch them. Chipmunk removal traps should be baited with peanut butter, oats, nuts or sunflower seeds. After capturing the chipmunks, you can release them at least one mile from the area where you captured them. The released chipmunks may not survive particularly if you capture them as the growing season comes to an end when you are relocating them away from the area they have adjusted to spend the winter season at. This chipmunk removal method may be temporary as other chipmunks may move into the area. You can also choose to trap them using a rat trap with bait which is similar to that used in the live trap. This chipmunk removal method will kill the rodents and allow you to control their population. It is not ideal to use poisoned baits because chipmunks are a source of food for other animals.

Shooting - Shooting is an erroneously believed to be effective chipmunk removal method when only a few chipmunks are involved. The desirable weapons to use are air-operated pellet riffles and small gauge shotguns and the best time to hunt for chipmunks is in the late afternoon or early morning. You should check with police officials in your area to know if it is legal to shoot chipmunks or not. If you choose this chipmunk removal method, you should note that these rodents are alert and nervous and therefore make difficult targets.
